£45,000 IN TWO DAYS

Final Rush to Escape 10 Per Cent. Penalty WELLINGTON CITY RATES Yesterday was the last day on which Wellington city rates could be paid without the addition of the usual 10 per cent, penalty. By 3.10 p.m. the amount received for the day at the offices of the Wellington City Council was £15,050, it being estimated that the total would reach £20,000. On Wednesday the total for the day was £25,000, and yesterday’s drop was unexpected, as ' experience in past years has led the city treasury officials to expect a record influx on the final pre-10-per-cent. day. The grand total of rates received this year is now in the vicinity of £450,000 (out of a total levy of £497,000), which is the same position as the city was in on March 31, 1935. As there are another 10 days of March to go the rates treasury is whatever is received in that period ahead of last year.
