THE DAIRY EXPORT TRADE

A London cable message published this morning indicates that the question of dairy imports into the United Kingdom is receiving the consideration of the British Government. Although the rights under the Ottawa Agreement giving to New Zealand and other Empire countries free and unrestricted entry of dairy products expired last November, Britain’s hand has since been restrained by reason of her trade agreement with Denmark. This will expire on April 23. and in any discussions that are at present taking place New Zealand has a vital interest. Representatives of the Dominions were to have met the British authorities in London next month, but this conference has in the meantime been postponed. British opinion appears to have swung from the quota to a duty or levy. New Zealand is now the principal source of imported butter on the United Kingdom market, and such an impost would hit this Dominion harder than any other country. It is therefore imperative that in any negotiations that take place New Zealand be represented by the strongest delegate available in order to secure the best possible bargain for our producers.
