Franco-Soviet Pact

Sir, —An interesting commentary on the Franco-Soviet pact and M. Litvinoff’s pacific protestations is the present condition of affairs in Spain. It is also an interesting or rather a tragic commentary on the mentality of our own peoples that they can see nothing to object to in an alliance between France and Soviet Russia. Let them look at Spain to see Communism in its true colours if they have forgotten Russia’s exhibition in their admiration for the Soviet’s, new policy of peace. Communism stands essentially for the destruction of religion, and we should be most thankful for the Fascist and Nazi Governments for this at least: that they have purged their own countries of the cancer which is now tearing the vitals of poor Spain. France in her terrible hatred of Germany has refused Hitler’s pleas for better understandings, and has betrayed the cause of Christian Europe by an alliance with the fountain-head of Communism — the direct inspiration of the incendiaries of churches, schools and convents in Spain.—l am, etc., T. G. WESTFIELD. Wellington, March 19.
