WANT TO COME TO NEW ZEALAND

English Family’s Ambition LETTER TO MAYOR OF DUNEDIN Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, March 19 Among the letters received to-day by the Mayor of Dunedin, Rev. E. T. Cox, was an inquiry from a family in Norfolk, England, as to the prospects of work and concerning conditions of life in New Zealand. In part the letter runs: “About two years ago my husband and I decided to leave England and find a country where we would be warmer and not so cramped. With this object in view we chose New Zealand. Out of an income of just under £4 weekly we saved £2OO, half of which was for our passage and expenses, tlm remainder to assist us till we found work. Unfortunately we have, met with no encouragement. at all, My husband would not write, but I do so to satisfy myself that there really is no hope in New Zealand for persons like ourselves who want to get away to a roomier place where people do not seem to overcrowd each other, to work and build good lives, and to hand on to that country their children for future service. We have a healthy, intelligent little daughter aged four years and a half. We both did war service and since that time, through no fault of our own, it has been a constant upheaval for us. ' Like lots of others we would like to find peace and warmth with a fair amount of security. We are home-loving, honest, conscientious and grateful, and would like to come to New Zealand if there is a chance of living under better conditions. England is so full, so crowded. I have written in the hope that you, perhaps, may explain the position.” Mr. Cox told a reporter that it seemed a pity to have to disappoint such obviously earnest people. “It is amply evident they do not realise the extent to which New Zealand suffered through the depression and they must be informed that at the present time, as it has been in the past five years, England is a much better place in which to live from the point of view of obtaining work.” Mr. Cox said.
