GRAIN AND PRODUCE

Canterbury Markets Dull Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, March 18. The grain and produce markets continue to be extremely dull in practically every section, and for the autumn business' is almost unprecedentedly slack. Uncertainty over the amount of damage by the unseasonable weather is the main cause of the dullness. Potatoes attract very little interest from outside, only odd inquiries and no orders having been received. Quotations where they are made at all are only nominal, and range between £5 and £5 10/- f.o.b. It is now known that damage has been fairly extensive, but as there is no precedent for so much wet weather during the growing season, those interested in the crop are unable to form any estimate at all of how bad the damage will be by the time the crop conies to be lifted. Everybody is now waiting to.see what the outcome will be before acting. Akaroa cocksfoot has been offered much more freely lately, and the quality is found to vary widely Prices range from 9d for the best good, bright seed of 131 b. or over, down to 6d. for the lower grades. The interest of merchants in the crop is declining, as there are no orders from outside. . , .
