A DULL MARKET

Business was very quiet ou the Wellington Stock Exchange yesteroay. but there was a slightly hrmer tone in the markets, the recent downward tendency appearing to have been checked. Ince movements, however, were very small. Government loans showed little quotable change on a steady demand. ihe per cent, stock, March, 193u-43. sold at £lOO/10/-. ox six months' the 1938-52 issue was done at £lO2/10/ . Local body and company debentures were not inquired for. Banks were dull and little changed, except New Zealands, which recovered to business on ’change at 45/3; buyers stayed in at 45/0. sellers hardening to 4 >/oAustralasias were wanted at £l~/0/o, sellers asking £l2/3/6. Umon of Australia were weak at £9/10/-. seders holdinx for £9/17/6. e ( Mortgage Corporations were fractionally firmer at 4/5, no sellers. Goldsbrough Morts showed weakness at 30/9. sellers ;;i/6. Auckland Gas were weak nt 24/6. No improvement was shown m insurance issues. South British sold at DO/-, and more were wanted at bJ/l*. Nationals were bid for at 18/-, and New Zealands and Standards at oJ/-. Industrial and trading issues were very quiet. Broken Hill Proprietary improved to business at 59/3 and t>9/6. buyers staying in at 59/7: the 10/- paid new issue were wanted at 35/6. Australian Glass were dull at 82/-. and British Tobaccos showed no improvement “t 40 /». G. «>• Goles found no response at id/-. ’‘°,U Smiths weakened to 15/9. seders 16/0. In the unofficial list Woolworths, Ltd., firmed from £6/S/- at the noon call to £G/12/G lit Hie close, sellers noiding for shares were very dull.
