THE SOCIAL ROUND

Thespians’ Reading The first of their usual weekly readings for the year was held by the Thespians in the Little Theatre, Cuba Street, last night. The play selected was “Accent on Youth,” the brilliant comedy by the witty American author Samuel Raphaelson. Those who read parts in this overseas success last night included Vivienne Tait, Ellie Brice, Dorothy Tansley, Victor S. Lloyd, Vryn Evans, G. H. Bassant and Martin Liddle. Stage directions were read by Myles F. E. Wright. There was a very large attendance of friends. Kitchen Tea Miss Gretta Stark, whose marriage will take place this month, whs guest of honour at a delightful evening given recently by Miss Anne Sime at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hicks, Ngaio. The evening took the form of a kitchen tea, and many useful presents were unwrapped by the bride-to-be. Miss Stark, Miss Madge Freeman and Mrs. Blanche Irwin sang during the evening, and some amusing games were played. Among those present were several members of the Sunny Bay Golf Club, of which Miss Stark is a member. County Club Meets Judging by the interest displayed at a general meeting of the County Chib, which was held last night at the Kelburn Kiosk, it is evident that this club, which was started by some enthusiastic members of 'Wellington’s younger set last winter, will be just as popular this year as it has already been. There is no doubt taht-the dunces which were .so successful last season will be repeated, and there Is promise of various other delightful and novel entertainments to be organised by the club.

Up to now the club has not held a general meeting, and the committee has been only a provisional one. Last night’s meeting was called mainly to elect a new committee, and as the majority of the original committee will be unable to stand for this year, it was necessary to gather together a different personnel. Those elected were: Misses Muriel Hunt, Wilmot Horton, June Reid, and Messrs. Tony Le May, Russell Hancock and Stuart Perry.

An appetising supper was handed round after the business had been completed and, with music provided for dancing, the meeting dissolved into a most enjoyable "cabaret evening.” Among those present were: Misses Belly Johnson. Lorna Baxter, June Reid. Clarice Maithewson. Moira Robertson, Evelyn Johnson. Dorothy Souter. Muriel Hunt. Wilmot Horton, Peggy Hyams, Messrs. Peter Thorpe, Pat kelly. Bruce Clarke, Bill Springhall, C. S. Perry. Malcolm Bennie, lan and Brian Graves, Tony Lc May, B. Sweetzer.
