GOLDEN WEDDING
Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Barltrop
Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Barltrop, Daniell Street, who recently celebrated their golden wedding, were married in St. Mark’s Church, Wellington, on January 26, 1886. The anniversary fell on a Sunday and they had the somewhat unique experience of being present at the same church and at the same hour (11 a.m.) fifty years later when their thank offering of a new lectern Bible was dedicated by the vicar, the Rev. N. F. E. Robertshawe. Mr. Barltrop was born at Spring .Grove, Nelson, and came to Wellington in 1881 to take up a cadetship in the Government Life Insurance Department. He retired from that department about thirteen years ago when holding the position of deputy commissioner. He is at present holding the office of vicar’s warden in his old parish church. Mrs. Barltrop, formerly Miss Barnard, was born at Oamaru, and came to Wellington with her parents in the early ’seventies. She was the first pupil teacher appointed to the New-1
town State school on its opening, and for many years she has held the position of lady district officer-in the St. John Ambulance Brigade. She is also a member of the committee of the District Nursing Guild of St. John. The anniversary was quietly celebrated at Mr. and Mrs. Barltrop’s residence, when a large number of their close relatives were present. Their health was proposed by the Rev. N. F. E. Robertshawe, and Mr. G. A. Kennedy in felicitous speeches, to which both Mr. and Mrs. Barltrop responded. On the following day an “at homo” was held for intimate friends. Their eldest son, Mr. G. W. Barltrop jnnr.. and Mr. F. K. Kelling, on behalf of the visitors, wished them many more years of happy married life.
