ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE

"Young, strong and violent men must be shown that if they treat men older than themselves with violence they must be punished in a way they understand.”

This comment was made by Mr. Justice du Parcq, at Birmingham Assizes, recently, when passing sentence of 12 strokes with the cat o’ nine tails and nine months’ hard labour on Charles Sherrington, aged 24, general dealer, who was found guilty of robbery with violence, together with another man, aud also of taking a motor-car without the consent of the owner.

The ease was a sequel to an attack on Mr. William Welch, cashier to Wakefield and Sons, of Aston, on September 27, when he was returning from Lloyds Bank with the wages. Mr. Welch went to the bank at 2 p.m. and was returning when two men attacked him, took £l6/2/10 from him and made off in a car, which was found abandoned. Mr. Welch identified Sherrington as the driver of the car, but Sherrington, when charged, declared his innocence. Evidence was given of finger-prints taken from the car and from Sherrington. and Detective-Inspector Cherrill, of Scotland Yard finger-print bureau, stated that in bis view these finger-prints were identical. Detective-Inspector Sterry told the court that there were no previous convictions against Sherrington for felony. but for the last 12 months he had been associating with one of the most dangerous gangs of criminals in Birmingham—people who continual.’’ used motor-cat's for this sort of offence
