King George’s Accession

The first session* of the new British Parliament was opened in February 6. by King George in person. His Majesty was accompanied by Queen Mary. There was the usual Royal procession and the King and Queen were vociferously cheered along the route. The weather was fine and there were enormous crowds in the streets. Members of the House of Commons assembled in the House of Lords, where the King, who was in nayal uniform, made the revised Accession Declaration as follows: "I solemnly and sincerely, in the presence of God, profess, testify and declare that I am a faithful Protestant and will, according to the true intent of the enactments securing the Protestant succession, unhold and maintain the said enactments to the best of my power, according to law.” [This was King George V’s first opening of Parliament. The previous declaration had been offensive to Roman Catholics.]

Railway passengers have an enemy in the dust ‘which yesterday enveloped the Rotorua express to Auckland like a mantle. The tine nilinice sand with which the permanent way is ballasted found its way all over everything and everybody. When the train arrived at Morrmsville Junction the original colour of the carriages was visible only in parts, and inside on the cushions and ledges there was a thick deposit reminiscent of a gold battery in the days of dry crushing.
