RABBIT CONTROL

Position in Wairarapa

FARMERS’ DISCUSSION

Dominion Special Service.

Masterton, January 20.

“I’m sorry to know that there is a feeling of dissatisfaction over the question of appointing an additional temporary rabbit inspector,” stated Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, in a letter received at to-day’s bi-monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The letter was received as a result of an inquiry by Mr. James Andrew, chairman of the Tinui branch, asking why the appointment of an additional rabbit inspector had been delayed from November. “There certainly has been some delay since I wrote you in November to the effect that we had a suitable man in mind whom we thought would be available,” continued Dr. Reakes. “Unfortunately, however, this fell through, and the matter had to be taken up afresh. Everything has been in train for making the appointment, and it is only a matter of securing the right type of man. Reports regarding two will be here this week, and the appointment will be made as soon as possible. You will, I know, appreciate the point that for this work it is necessary to get men of the right type who not only possess the necessary practical knowledge, but also have the capacity for carrying out their work tactfully and firmly.”

A further letter was received from Mr. R. Roberts, M.P., in which he stated that he had communicated with Dr. Reakes, with the request that the subject be’ dealt with immediately. The president, Mr. Hugh Morrison: “Well, we’ve got 'heir promises—” Mr. James Andrew: "That’s all right, Mr. Chairman, but we’ve had those promises before. We had them in November. It seems ridiculous to me that they can’t get a man. There must be plenty of suitable men about who would like a position such as this. We must emphasise the necessity of getting this appointment made urgently.” It was resolved that the department be requested to make the appointment without further delay.
