Manchester Unity Oddfellows

The Noble Grand, Bro. Hewer, presided over a recent meeting of the Loyal Rose of the Valley Lodge (Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows), at which there was a fair attendance. It was decided to hold a'picnic on Anniversary Day. Bro. Smith was installed iw Guardian of the Lodge for the ensuing term. Bro. Seddon reported yu affairs connected with the Juvenile Lodge. At a meeting of the Loyal Petone Lodge recently, the noble grand presided over a good al tendance. Bro. Barraclough was accorded lodge honours, to which he replied. Routine business disposed of, lodge adjourned for harmony. Bro. D. J. M. Mellraith presided over a good attendance at the first meeting of the year of the Loyal Britannia Lodge. Bros. ( Stewart and Williams, were congratulated on their being, elected by the district management committee to the positions of deputy grand master and member of the committee respectively. Two candidates were elected for initiation into the lodge and order, and the ceremony performed. Bro. Treadwell reported on the death of Bro. J. Steal, and a motion of condolence with the relatives was passed. Past Provincial Grand Master Bro. Jack, of the Otago district, and Bro. Lilburne, of Milton, were accorded lodge honours, and replied expressing their appreciation, of the welcome. At the conclusion of the lodge members enjoyed games of bowls. At the last meeting of the Loyal Newtown Lodge, Bro. S. Eudes, past grand, acted as noble grand, and presided over a good attendance. Bro. Webb, past grand, acted as vice-grand. A new member was initiated into the lodge and order, Bro. L. Spencer being the conductor, and Bro. A. Rhodes delivering the lecture master’s charge. Lodge honours were accorded the newly-made brother. The noble grand extended an hearty welcome to visiting members, who included Bro. Patten, a past grand of the Good Intent Lodge, Auckland, and Sister Popple, of the Loyal Napier Lodge. At the conclusion of the meeting members enjoyed games of cards. Sister E. Tobin, past grand, acted as noble grand at the recent meeting of the Loyal .Sister Wallis Lodge. A reminder was received from the Loyal Masterton Lodge of the invitation for Loyal Sinter Wallis Lodge to visit them cither on their lodge night or some other night suitable to the Loyal Sister Wallis Lodge. It was resolved to endeavour to make the visit early in Marell. A report, was given of the meeting held at Loyal Moera Lodge for the purpose of conferring degrees, at which the district grand master also installed Bro. Stewart as deputy grand master, vice Bro. A. Rippon. Bro. M illiams was installed as a member of the district management committee, vice Bro. Stewart. Apologies for absence were received from the noble grand and the vice grand. Order of Oddfellows .Rose of Wellington Rebekah Lodge, No. 38.—Sister E. Fitzsimmons, I’.N.G., presided over a good attendance of members and visitors, including Bro. G. Rudkin, grand warden, Sister M. -Sergent, lady district deputy grand master, who was on an official visit, and Bro. A. J. Bargli, D.D.G.M., Hutt Valley district. Five women candidates were initiated, and four further candidates were nominated. Reports were received I’roffi the lodge representatives on the recent children's Christmas party, held in conjunction with Southern Cross 'Lodge, No. 24, and the forthcoming annual district picnic. After the visitors had responded to a vote of welcome, tlie lodge went into harmony. ■Onslow Lodge, No. 128, Khandallah. — Bro! E. A. Gregory, N.G., .presided over the first meeting of the new year. Correspondence, accounts and social invitations were dealt with, several members were authorised to receive degrees at district lodge, and a lecture concluded the evening. , Zcalandia Lodge, No. 48, Newtown. Bro. J. O. Josling, N.G., presided over a good attendance of members and visitors, including Bro. G. F. Rudkin, grand warden, Bro. P. J. Lee, P.G., P.C.P., Bro. E. K. Binsted, P.G.. Southern Cross Lodge, No. 24, and Bro. F. Reilly. P.G., William Gane Lodge, No. 5 (N.S.W.). Six members were reported on the sick list, relative sick-pay and other accounts being passed. ■Bro. P. Fifield, P.G., reported on behalf of his committee on the successful conducting of the children’s Christmas party, revived after a lapse of several years, sonic 70 youngsters being well catered for with toys, refreshments and games. Arrangements were put in hand, on the committee's recommendation, to ensure this function being continued. Bro. C. C. Blackmore, P.G., reported the lodge team bad been successful in the third series of games for the U.F.S.C. “500” shield tournament in the match against St. Mary’s branch, H. The syllabus for the ensuing year, for inclusion in the district handbook, was discussed generally, and left in the hands of the lodge executive. Wellington District Lodge.—Bro. G. F. Rudkin, 1.P.D.D.G.M., presided in the •absence of the D.D.G.M., Bro. R. J. Mathers, who was on leave. Accounts totalling £B4/4/1 were passed. Eight members of subordinate lodges were advanced to third degree by Bro. A. Evans, I. and staff. An invitation was accepted to the 10th anniversary social of Otaki Lodge, No. 133, and Bro. A. Evans, 1.G., was appointed judge for the match between Wilde,v Lodge. No. 107. and Ngati-toa Lodge, No. 143, for the district “500” shield. Reports were received from relative committees on the recent reception to the grand sire, Bro. A. A. Watson, Sydney. Unemployed members’ dues fund, and annual picnic, and the half-yearly balance-sheet received for audit. The matter of suitably celebrating the centenary of foundation of the order in Australasia at Sydney on February 24. 1536. was referred to tbe district executive for recommendations.

Ngati-toa Lodge. No. 143. Porirua. — Bro. T. Hardie, P.G., presided over a good attendance, visitors ineluding Bro. 11. 11. Coote, P.D.D.G.M.. Bro. A. Evans, P.G., and members of Maraenui Lodge. No. 124. Miramar, and officers and members of Wilde.v Lodge, 107, Island Bay. One member was reported sick, and general business was conducted. It was decided to ballot on three candidates at the next meeting. The social committee reported that a net profit of £l9/9/- has resulted on the New Year’s Eve dance. The match with a IVildcy Lodge team of 12 for the district “500” shield was then played, the lodge team proving successful, making this the eighth successive time tbe shield has been won by a Ngati-toa team. Esther Rebekah Lodge. No. 30. Karori. ■—.Sister A. McKeand. N.G., presided. Accounts, quarterly returns, and correspondence were dealt with, and one candidate was favourably reported on. Sister McKcaml. N.G.. was accorded thanks for a trophy donated, and Sister M. Turner conveyed greetings frhm Victoria Rebekah Lodge. No. 2, Newtown, the evening being concluded with games and supper. Southern Cross Lodge. No. 24. Wellington.—Bro. W. Wrightson, N.G., presided over a large attendance of members and visitors, including Bros. L. Cairns. P.G.. Zealandia Lodge, No. -IS, C. 11. TTavill, P.G., Wilde.v Lodge, No. 1(17, and 11. Edmanson. P.G., Kupe Lodge, No. 149. Eleven members were reported on the sicklist, and sick-pay, medical accounts, and general accounts, totalling £ll5/19/10. were passed. Two candidates were nominated. and :i relative investigation committee set up. Reports were received on the annual children’s Christmas parly held in conjunction with Rose of Wellington Rebekah Lodge; from the annual district picnic delegate, and the audit committee; quarter, half-year, and annual returns, and balance-sheet being adopted. Several members wrote acknowledging a Christinas donation from the lodge. Three members were reported to have attained third degree at district lodge, and it was decided that the second succeeding meeting would lie devoted to a lecture in accordance wilh syllabus. Ngaio Rebekah Lodge. No. 85.—Sister E. Thompson, N.G., presided over a good

attendance of members and visitors, including Bro. G. F. Rudkin, grand warden, Sister M. Sergent, L.D.D.G.M., Sister A. Smith. I’.N.G., Rose of Wellington Rebekah Lodge. No. 38, and Sister E. Rout, I’.N.G., Esther Rebekah Lodge, No. 30. In addition to conducting general business, one woman candidate was elected and initiated, it being reported that a number of other candidates remained to come forward. The grand warden congratulated the lodge on progress made in its first quarter, and conveyed greetings of the grand lodge executive, and the D.D.G.M. and other visitors also extended congratulations and greetings.
