Successful Meeting at LoAver Hutt CHAMPIONS IN ACTION Some exciting races were witnessed by a large crowd of spectators at the liutt Recreation Ground last night, when a sports meeting was held under the light uf acetylene flares. Tracis, field tuitl cycle events were held, and though the lighting was not as good as it might have been the standard of performance was very high, P, Bowie, New Zealand sprint hurdles champion, found a strong opponent in J. McDonald, New Zealand University champion, and won by inches in a great finish after each had had to take five steps to the final hurdle. The light disconcerted the hurdlers a little, AV. J. Fitzsimmons, Wellington sprint title-holder, made his first appearance of the season in the sprints, but did not meet with any success. /The mile proved easy for A. R. Wilson, former Auckland champion, who caught the field from scratch in the fourth lap and went right away on the back straight to beat E. Taylor b.v 59 yards. The half-mile handicap was a verygood race, W. Ogg and E. Forne, the New Zealand mile champion, were both off scratch. Ogg led the way into the straight, but Forne came up strongly and headed him just short of the tape. The time was fast, 2.1 4-5. T. J. Crowe, New Zealand broad aud high jump champion, competed with distinction, winning the broad jump with 21ft. 9in. and jumping sft. The field was bunched most of the way out to Taita, but at the turn for home Buchanan was leading his chib-mate, Stevens, by about 15 yards with the others close behind. About three miles from home Buchanan and Stevens began to pull away. They in* creased their lead, with Hiscock about 100 yards back.
