Some Interesting Records

(By Recorder.) The recent match for the Hawke Cup between Manawatu (the holders) and Nelson, in which two new records for these matches were established, has brought interest to bear on this contest. First contested in 1910-11 as a knockout competition, Rangitikei aud Southland played off the final at Christchurch, the Hawke Cup became a challenge trophy in 1913-14, and has remained so since. Altogether 89 matches have now been played in.the competition; Manawatu versus Southland this week will be the ninetieth. . In the first match in the 1910-11 competition, Wairarapa were dismissed by Manawatu for 39, and in the second game North Taranaki made only ,38 runs against South Taranaki. The lowest innings On record, however, was made by South Taranaki against Wanganui m December, 1912. the whole side being dismissed for 26 runs, C. A. Holland (ti'C for 15) and E. H. L. Bernau (four tor 7) being the destroying agents.. Both these men later represented New Zealand. Another score lower than Nelson’s 3b last week was the effort ,of Hawke’s Bay against Nelson in Deceinbei, 1925, that side being all out for 34 runs. With regard to record totals, Manawatu’s 506 last week heads the list, others being 496 by Taranaki v. Poverty Lay in 1933-34; 484 for eight wickets (declared) by Nelson against Marlborough the same season; 474 by Rangitikei against Manawatu in 1929-30; 460, Manawatu v. Southland, in' 1929-30; 462, Nelson v. Marlborough, in 1925-26; and 453, \vanganui v. South Taranaki, in 1912-13, to which latter Taranaki's reply was the -b total already referred to. . The match aggregate record is l’-Ja runs for 40 wickets in 1929-30, Manawatu scoring 295 and 352. while Rangitikei made 177 and 474. Another good aggregate was 1275 for 32 wickets in 1933-04, Taranaki scoring 496 and 133 for three wickets, with Poverty Bay scoring —4 and 422 for nine wickets (declared) Altogether 37 century scores have been made bv individual batsmen, C. A. Kmzett’s 272 not out for Nelson versus Marlborough in 1933-34 being the highest; R W. Orton, 204 for Wanganui v. Waikato, in 1923-24, was the only other man to exceed the double century. The record partnerships are: H. Going (160) and G. Hampton (100), 185 for the sixth wicket, for Waikato v. RangitikeCin 1931-32; and 184 for the fourth wicket for Rangitikei v Manawatu, by D Cameron (160) and L. Burke (ID . To these is now added 184 tor the ninth wicket by M. Olliver (127) and t. Hearsey (S 3 for Manawatu v. Nelson. The previous best, stand for the ninth wicket was 101 bv E. Langbein (o 9 and R. Hajcock (33) for Nelson v. Marlborough in 1921-22.
