Handling Meat in Shops
Sir, —1 should like to thank “Lover of Cleanliness” for his recent letter, in which he complains of butchers handling cooked ham and other meat instead of using a fork, and 1 am sure there are many others who would heartily endorse the complaint. I should like to point out also the need for more cleanliness on the part of vendors of other kinds of foods.
Could the department, too, issue a warning to mothers of the danger of passing on germs from one child to another, and urging the need of training children, not to put their fingers in their mouths. Very few people realise that the mouth is a source of infection, and the licking of the fingers is very liable to spread colds and other diseases. Even babies can be trained to keep their fingers out of their mouths. All of this is a matter of education, and much could be done by health authorities by timely articles on such matters.—l am, EDUCATION, Wellington, January 20.
