Archdeacon H. Monaghan
Archdeacon H. Monaghan, of St Mary’s, Timaru, returned to New Zealand by the Makura yesterday, after 16 months abroad. He was accompanied by Mrs. Monaghan. A former cricket representative, and still a keen follower of the game, Archdeacon Monaghan was made an honorary member of the M.C.C. during his stay in England, He witnessed the second test match at Home, and while iii Melbourne on his way out saw Don Bradman knock up his big score of 357'7
In England Archdeacon and Mrs. Monaghan made a motor tour of the cathedral towns. They returned via the Mediterranean. At Naples they saw 20,000 Italian troops being embarked for the Abyssinian front, and all down the Mediterranean concentrated naval activity was in evidence. People in New Zealand, however, took the Abyssinian situation much too seriously, said the traveller. In England it was regarded without any of the popular apprenhension so noticeable in New Zealand.
