DEFENCE OF EMPIRE

British Ministers Discuss Co-ordination MAY BE NEW PORTFOLIO By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Loudon, January 17. The “Manchester Guardian’s” political correspondent says that the defence Ministers and the chiefs of staff of the fighting services met four times during the past week and not only discussed rearmament plans, but considered at length plans for co-ordinating defence. It is'believed that it has been decided to appoint a Minister to undertake this task. This does not involve the creation of a. special Ministry. It is believed that co-ordination and also mobilisation of industry for war may be attained by making a defence Minister chairman of the two existing subcommittees of Imperial defence. Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, who has had long experience in presiding over the Committee of Imperial Defence, is favoured for . the new position, which alternatively may be given to Sir Samuel Hoard- if he is sufficiently restored to health.
