TRENTHAM WORK

Might Beats Cuddle

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Princess Doreen Goes Well

(By

The Watcher.)

Heavy and continuous rain softened the tracks for work at Trentham on Saturday morning, but it lifted before any galloping was done, and it later became line with a drying wind. The No. 1 grass was available for fast work and provided good going, though a trifle soft, and on tlie slow side. Proceedings were more interesting on account of several visitors being among the workers. Local Cup Fair. Red Sun and Sunee had their usual work-out over a mile. Sunee, with the outside running, again finished in front, but Red Sun was conceding plenty of weight. The time was 1.40. Two-year-old \Vcll. Brabant worked well against Te Raugitumau over a half in 51) and could have done better. Might Beats Cuddle. Cuddle pulled very bard in front of Might for six furlongs in a mile and a quarter gallop, and Might drew up and beat her home fairly comfortably in 2.14, the last mile in 1.47. Cuddle is not at her best in.the going as it waa but Might worked very well. Acceptable worked over half a mile at» a good three-quarter pace. Sansfoy was too good for Ayreeleigh over five in 1.44. the last half in 51J. Sausfoy will be ridden by It. W. Savage. Princess Doreen Goes Well. Princess Doreen completely reversed her showing o'f Thursday morning by running away from After Money at the end of seven in 1.31. The time was very (good for the state of the going, and she did it well. After Money did not show up too well, but she was not knocked about. The Hawera two-year-olds Notinm and Gay Chief did easy work on the two-year-old track. Shy worked well over half a mile with Chile, finishing well in front without being after time. Good Sltowings. Deficit, Cricket and Sea Wrack sprinted half a mile smartly together in 50. Deficit shaped best, but they all went well and Sea Wrack impressed as a likely sort. Bad Track Workers. Guy Broney and Queen of Song ran a very leisurely mile in. 1.51, taking 55 for the lust half. _ • Boomerang shaded Vinco over four in 521, and worked well. Liked the Soft Ground. Double Gift was much too good for Going Gay at the end of four in 524. Double Gift has grown into a solid filly and she worked well. K. W. Savage will ride her. On the Improve. Hine Ru early put a big.break on Darecourt in a six-furlong.gallop,, buC.Darg.-.L court drew up in the straight and finished a good effort in frorit in 1.18). He is an .'

improved hack. J. Dooley will ride him in the apprentices’ race. Three-year-olds. Kinnoull and Superex were not knocked about in a comfortable mile it) 1.49, the former going the belter. Some trouble was anticipated in getting Kinnoull to go off and Wonderful went off with him. .but his services were hardly necessary. Kinnoull has grown since he was here in. October, and although be may be short of racing he is not carrying superfluous condition. Sprint Candidate. Bon Tray was given an easy five, the last half in 54. No rider- has been engaged yet for him in the Telegraph Handicap. ..Yesterday’s work. There was very little doing yesterday morning beyond pace work. Conditions were fine and the rain has put the track in first-class order. The only gallop against the watch was Wonderful and Superex, half a mile in 50. Caen. Blue Garter, and Royal Papa were additional visitors working. Arrivals included H. Cutts with Paper Slipper. Impersonator,Fracas, and Sky Pilot; P. V. Mason with Variant and Roaming; C. Davey with Davolo and Colombo; .1. Stewart with Silver Ring; F. D. Jones with Custos, Cerne Abbas, and Dollar Prince: C. C. McCarthy with Argentic; W. H. Jones with Rona Bay; also Rebel Chief, Knockfin, and Golden Dart. H. Nurse, trainer of Knockfin, is leaving for Trentham to-night, when J. Campbell with Tunneller and J. H. Prosser with Great Star are also coming up. Yearling Parade. The annual yearling parade, now a fixed institution during Wellington Cup week, was held at Trentham yesterday. The weather was excellent, and there was a very large attendance. Yearlings were paraded in the ring, and Mr. C. E. Robert, son, of the blood-stock department of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., detailed the breeding and other interesting information for the benefit of spectators. The sale will start at 10 o’clock on Thursday morning, and buyers are advised that owing to lots 1 and 2 being withdrawn the sale will commence with lot 3, the first of Mr. G. M. Currie's Koatanui draft. Stallion for Westmere.

The stallion Phalerbn Day. who is to go to the Westmere Stud, arrived from England by the Remuera yesterday.

They Enjoyed Themselves. A florin changed hands in a side wager at Trentham on Saturday morning between the respective owners of Boomerang and Vinco, when the former beat his mate. The loser made allegations that the boy had been bribed! T. R. George had four of his patrons out watching the work of their horses.

Working Well. Might has been working well in his last couple of gallops at. Trentham. It is obvious that he likes the sting out of the ground, and with conditions in his favour on Saturday morning bo rgtlier surprised track watchers by his decisive defeat of Cuddle. Cuddle, however, has never been at her best except on firm going.

She Impressed. Princess Doreen, whose owner was out to see her work on Saturday morning, rose to the occasion with an excellent gallop. She is a patchy mare, but there is no doubt about her galloping abilitv when she goes. She need.s a lot of work' to bring her to her best, and ns she is looking exceptionally fit and well, she should be a possibility for a stake during the meeting. .

Lazy on the Track. Gay Broney and Queen of Song put up poor- time for their-mHe-gnllop-on Saturday morning, but Queen of Song was held back to her mate who, according to his

owner-trainer, is the laziest of track workers. Hest. . , „ Host did not accept at either 1 rentham or Ashhurst on account of developing u slight attack of kidney trouble last .Monday. It is wearing off. Mrs. McCartin will probably be sending her representative to Wairoa. For Jumping. , Tail Light is now one of L. Knapps team at Awapuni, and is owned by Mr. K. McK. Duncan, who purchased him from Sir Charles Clifford during the progress of the recent Manawatu meeting. Kiudlicart. The reason for Kindheart not racing on Wednesday next is that he struck himself slightly when working. Verdict Upset. . The fact that A. E. Ellis succeeded in his appeal against his suspension by the Dunedin Jockey Club s judicial committee. which was. endorsed by the district committee, has naturally aroused considerable discussion in racing, circles _ (says “Sentinel"). It would be interesting to know the nature of the evidence heard in connection with the matter. Cuddle and Co. Cuddle is held in some quarters to oe fairly treated in the Wellington Cup (says the Dunedin writer "Sentinel"). In the' Metropolitan Handicap Silver Ring gave Cuddle lib. and a going-away beating by three lengths. In the Wellington Cup Cuddle meets Silver Ring on 311,. worse terms without anything being allowed for the form on the final day at Riccarton. If the merit of the form in the Metropolitan Handicap came under consideration, Silver Ring would have been asked to meet Cuddle on about 51b. worse terms over the same distance. If that is so. Cuddle meets Silver Ring on 81b. worse terms in the Wellington Cup. than when they last met over the same distance. It really seems that Silver Ring has Cuddle at his mercy when they meet again. It is safe to assume that Cuddie has improved, but there is equally no reason why Silver Ring has seemingly de teriorated to the extent of about a stone. Silver Ring is a horse just as likely to train on as Cuddle. He was far from his best at the opening of the New Zealand Cup meeting, but looked a much-improved horse at the end of a week, although a mile and a half appeared to be beyond his distance. There is an old adage about a horse not being able to run off weight by remaining in his box. but here we have a case where Silver Ring could be estimated at half a stone better than Cuddle in the Metropolitan, and now meets her on 91b. better terms in the Wellington Cup.
