Farm Hands

Sir,—l have read with interest many letters which have appeared in the “Dominion” for and against iarin work, conditions, farm wages, and the like. Lut no one has stated the real reason why farm life has little appeal to the young man, especially the young town man. In a few words, the whole truth lies in the undeniable fact of the loneliness of the country. I. personally, admit that the country life is insufferable with its stilled monotony, broken only by the calls of animals or occasional “canned” music: -t is more nerve-wracking than the. din ot the most bewildering, of town noises. In rhe country, the lite is merely work, eat, nnd sleep:' but in the town tho work is limited, and there are many hours of daily leisure which may be used, in almost any direction, in a way that will satisfy any appetite for excitement or enjoyment in life. The country appeals for a holiday, but beyond that- it is just a living tomb. As a matter of fact, most of the younger men who write complaining of low farm wages, unsuitable conditions, etc., are not reallv disgruntled because of these tilings. Thev'are really, if they only knew it. merely piqued by the circumstances which forced tliem into a channel which is irksome to them. They are just dissatisfied because their lives are too monotonous. too empty, too humdrum, compared with those of others whom they know. If, while working in the country, they had access to the full enjoyments which the town provides, they would, bo perfectly contented under any other circumstances. The only tiling which will take young, men into the country is sheer necessity, for it will be admitted that, the modern young man desires to live in the modern,, way, and is more interested in a “flapper" than a sheep. Sheep abound in the country; “flappers” abound in) the town I —l am, etc. “TOWNIE.”
