CONCERT OF MERIT

Hutt Valley Liedertafel

A bright programme was presented by the Hutt Valley Liedertafel at their second concert of the season in St. James’s Hall Lower Hutt, last evening, under the conductorship of Mr. Harry Brusey, with Mr. R. Horman at the piano. The programme commenced with two rousing numbers, stirringly sung, “Give a Rouse” and “Boot and Saddle,” by Granville Bantock, followed by the melodious “All Through the Night.” The next item was a violin solo, “Chamon Arbre” (Rimsky Korsakoff), by Mr. W. Hay dock, who <mve a fine interpretation ot this typically poignant Russian composition. Mr. Haydock had to respond to an encore. He was accompanied by Miss Phillips. The choir followed with “Song of the Flea, interpreted with admirable satire, and the appealing negro spiritual, “Goin Home.” _ , Miss Myra Sawyer,’’who possesses a soprano voice of delightful quality, was heard in the gay “Carnival de Venice (Benedict), and as an encore Miss sawver sang charmingly an old English folk son" “O No John!” The singer was nccompanied by Mr. Temple White. Sung with a full body of tone, the choir was obviously at home in a number of sea shanties with which the first portion of the programme closed. They were as follow: —“Blow the Man Down, Goodbye. Fare Ye Well,” “Johnny Comes Down to Hilo.” “Bound for the Rio Grande, “Whisky Johnny,” “Billy Boy.” The second portion of the programme commenced with “Lillian of Berry mid “Sunday” (Brahms), arranged for the Liedertafel by Mr. Claude Haydon. These were particularly well sung. A violin solo. “Andante and Rondo from Sth Concerto (de Beriot) was exquisitely played by Mr Havdoek, who responded with an encore. An innovation in the presentation of the popular cantata “Robin Hood (J L. Hatton) was introduced by the choir, the soloists being “Marion" (Myra Sawver) “Robin Hood” (J. O. Bonifant). “Bishop” (H. B. Robb), “Little John (G. F. Brand). The choruses of the cantata were entered into with zest by the choir, which was most fortunate in having the assistance of excellent soloists. t'he singing of the choruses was characterised by a fine precision and enthusiasm, and was nrtily applauded by the audience.
