STRIKING SUCCESSES

New Zealand Students at Oxford

TWO FIRSTS IN ENGLISH HONOUR SCHOOL

Outstanding successes were won by New Zealand students at Oxford University during the past year. The class list in the Honour School of English Literature placed eight candidates in the first class and t.wo of these were New Zealanders. In addition a third New Zealand student secured a secondclass pass. The New Zealanders in the first-class list were: J. A. W. Bennett and J. A. E. Mulgan, both formerly of Auckland University College. The second-class success was that of Miss M. W. WestWatson, formerly of Canterbury University College, and daughter of the Bishop of Christchurch, Rt. Rev. Dr. C. West-Watson. M.. Bennett, educated at- the Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland, had' an outstanding career at the University, taking his master of arts degree with first-class honours in English. He was awarded a Post-Graduate Scholarship in Arts in 1933 and proceeded to Merton College, Oxford. Mr. Mulgan, son of Mr. Alan Mulgan, until lately literary editor of the “Auckland Star.’’ was educated at Wellington College and Auckland Grammar School. He was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship, took his B.A. degree at Auckland University College and in 1933 went to Merton College, Oxford. The success of the Aucklanders is considered by some university authorities in ‘Wellington as significant in view of criticism earlier in the year of the standard of work in English at Auckland by Professor IV. A. Sewell, recently appointed to the chair there. There were over 120 successful candales in the Honour School of English literature at Oxford, and the fact that two New Zealanders were among the eight awarded first-class passes and a third well up on the second-class list, is taken as a fine tribute to the work done in the University of New Zealand.
