TREE CRASHES ON HOUSE Dominion Special Service. Waipukurau, August 29. A heavy wilid experienced throughout Wednesday night and in the early hours of this morning caused several interferences with electric power services.

The gale, which was from the southwest, assumed serious proportions. Trees were blown down in many places, falling across both telephone and power lines, with the consequent dislocation of services. Motor-car hoods were blown off touring cars, while the force of the gale was so violent that it was at times impossible to make headway against it.

Trees have been blown down in all parts of Centra: Hawke's Bay. It will take some time to restore country telephone services. During the night a tree fell across the house of a Makaretu settler, going right through the roof and crashing into the dining-room, but fortunately there was no one in the room at the time.

At 7 o’clock to-night the gale was still raging.

The Power Board staff has done yeoman work under trying conditions, and most of the are again receiving power, but it will take days to make good the damage.

FIERCE MANAWATU WINDS Dominion 'Special Service. Palmerston North, August 29. Boisterous weather conditions have prevailed throughout the Manawatu during the past few days, and winds have steadily increased in velocity until to-day, when the whole district was being buffeted by a strong westerly gale. The fierceness of the wind both yesterday and again to-day has had a severe effect upon gardens and orchards.

Unless there is an abatement soon trouble is expected with trees. So far no damage has been reported except from Church Street, where this morning a large cabbage tree, carrying a heavy burden of climbing growtn was uprooted. The falling tree damaged the fence and brought down some telephone lines.

PLANE UNABLE TO LEAVE NAPIER Dominion Special Service. Gisborne, August 29. Although fine weather was experienced in Gisborne to-day with moderate winds, the East Coast Airways plane was unable to leave Napier, at al; during the day on account of the severe hurricane winds prevailing there The plane will leave Napier at 5.30 tomorrow morning for Gisborne, picking up its usual run from Gisborne at 7 a.m.

A violent gale which lasted about an hour visited Kereru this morning, starting at about 8 o’clock. The gale wag so heavy that hundreds of young trees were uprooted, while many older ones also came to grief. Considerable damage was done to several small buildings, and in several instances telephone connections were dislocated. At. one stage the air was literally black with shifting' soil which was lifted from recently ploughed paddocks. Generally residents had quite an anxious time.

After the first force of the gale eased off the wind continued in forceful gusts for the remainder of the morning. It was reported later that quite a number of fences and wireless masts had also been blown down.
