UNPAID RATES

Position in Hutt Valley

A request, for provision this session for a grant to the boroughs of Lower* Hutt and I’etone to meet the losses occasioned through the non-payment of rates by the State Advances and other Government departments, was contained in notice of question given by Mr. W. Nash (Lab., Hutt) to the Minister of Finance, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Nash also asked the Minister whether he would make provision for the payment of rates on all properties let at an economic rental by the State Advances, Mortgage Corporation and other departments of State. The losses incurred by the Lower 1 iutt Borough up to Marell of the present year through the failure of the State to pay rates, he said, amounted to £30,000, and the payers of rates in the borough were being heavily taxed to meet the deficiency through nonpayment of rates by the State.
