COSTLY JEWELS

Some of the most magnificent black pearls in existence, rojTes of gleaming. creamy pearls, emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds were included in an amazing collection of jewels at the famous Jewels of the Empire Ball at Grosvenor House. The Duke and Duchess of Kent were present. The stones were all set and were worn as ornaments by the guests who took part in a 'cabaret arranged by Lady Mount Temple and Mrs. Oswald Birley. As “Diamond” Lady Warrender wore a ring set with a diamond an inch and a quarter in width, said to be the finest in the world. Lady Mount Temple, as “Emerald,” wore egg-shaped gems worth £20,000. The Duchess of Kent’s very simple dress was of rose pink crepe, with a folded drapery over each shoulder. With it she wore a wide shaded pink feather ruffle. Extraordinary precautions were taken for the safety of the jewels. The guests wearing them were conducted to a secret room where the jewels were placed upon them by the heads of the firms who lent them. Twenty-four detectives kept watch. Guests were then taken by a special lift and after the pageant, which was watched by detectives stationed at different points, the wearers were then conducted back, the jewels taken off, and returned to their stores by a secret route different from the one by which they came.
