Jlan will never be able to tiy to the moon, and ultra-shortwaves cannot be of real use to broadcasting. These facts emerge from a discovery by Professor E. V. Appleton after many months of research. He declares that in the upper atmosphere there is a vast layer of heat of 1090 degrees Centigrade. the existence of which has hitherto been unknown to science. In it no known machinery could function. The layer thus constitutes an impassable barrier between the world and the space beyond. This conclusion is confirmed by many members of the Royal Society, with which Professor Appleton conferred. The layer, in the opinion of Professor Appleton, upsets researches which are being conducted upon wireless shortwaves and the possibility of harnessing micro waves for radv transmission.
An official of the World Radio Research League says: “The discovery of the heat belt means that all uaves below the six-metre mark are ~ut out of action so far as clear reception is concerned.”
Professor Edward Victor Appleton, M.A., D.Sc.. F.R.S., is Wheatstone professor of physics at the University of London. At Cambridge University, where he was scholar and exhibitioner, he took a Natural Science Tripos, parts I and IL in 1913 and 1914. He was Wiltshire prizeman in 1913 and Hutchinson research student in 1914. After serving in the Great War he was in 1920 appointed assistant demonstrator in experimental physics at the Cavendish Laboratory. This was followed by an appointment as sub-lector at Trinity College in 1922. Ibis a member of the Radio Research Board and chairman of the British National Committee for Radio-telegraphy. In 1929 he was Morris Liebinan memorial prizeman and in 1933 Hughes medallist of the Royal Society. He has published a number of original papers on electricity and the scientific problems of wireless telegraphy.
