FORTY FEARED DEAD
Newfoundland Hurricane
FISHING BOATS WRECKED St. John (Newfoundland), August 27. Reports have been received of death and destruction as a result of a violent 60-mile-an-hour gale on the southeastern coast of Newfoundland. It is estimated that 40 fishermen were drowned as a result of the hurricane. Seventeen men from four schooners are definitely known to be dead ami four derelict vessels are adrift off the coast with their crews missing.
Three fishing schooners were wrecked in Trepassey Bay. two men being found dead in the cabin of one, and it is feared that nine others who are missing from the other two have been drowned. Scores of smaller craft were wrecked.
Many houses were unroofed, some dwellings being blown away. Cargoes of fresh fish were lost and large quantities of dried codfish blown out to sea.
