ASSESSMENT COURT

Objections to Values of City Leaseholds

SITTING CONCLUDED After being occupied for over three weeks on the task, the Assessment Court yesterday finished its work of hearing objections by property owners to valuations .made recently by the Valuation Department. The court heard objections bo assessments made for city leaseholds and adjourned to inspect the properties. The decisions on all the cases heard during the session will probably be given simultane-ously-and probably not for some days. At the hearing yesterday, Mr. J. O’Shea represented the Wellington City Council and Messrs, Frazer McKenzie and C. Buckingham appeared for the Valuation Department. The court was Messrs. J. G. L. Hewitt (president) and R. C. Burton and H. E. Leighton (assessors). The following objections were heard: Aubrey Gualter, Brandon Street, £6300; Brandon Street Chambers, Brandon Street, £8000; Wellington Deposit, Mortgage and Building Association, Ltd., Panama Street, £6400; C. J. S. Harcourt, Lambton Quay and Panama Street, £13,735; Wellington Woollen Co., Ltd., Willeston Street, £6000; Wellington Woollen Co., Ltd., Jervois Quay and Willeston Street, £8450; Wellington 'Woollen Co., Ltd., Jervois Quay, £7255; E. W. Mills and Co., Jervois Quay, Hunter Street and Victoria Street, £36,000; J. Hott Ltd., Jervois Quay, £6510; A. S. Paterson and Co., Ltd., Cuba Street, £6900; A. S. Paterson, Cuba Street, £6BOO.

The general contention of the objectors was that the values were inequitable compared with those of 1929. It was also argued that the assessments were not consistent with those made for freehold properties. Mr. Hewitt, at the conclusion of the sitting, expressed appreciation of the efficient way the revision of the city had been carried out by the valuers, and also' acknowledged the helpful way the cases had been presented to the court.
