RESEARCH IN ENGLAND
Comprehensive Study of
Fish Liver Oils
WELLINGTON SCIENTIST
Mr. J)’. B. Shorland, M.Se., of the Chemistry Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture, Wellington, has obtained two years’ xleave of absence in order to pursue research work at Liverpool University in accordance with the Nationfil Research Scholarship awarded him, and he will leave the Dominion next month. This scholarship is awarded by the Council of Industrial and .Scientific Research and provides for the research work to be clone sons to be of special advantage to New Zealand.
Arrangements have been made whereby Mr. Shorland will conduct his research under Professor Hiklitch, of Liverpool, who is the Campbell Brown professor of oils, fats and waxes. For the past three or four years Mr. Shetland has been working on New Zealand fish liver oils. With Mr. F. A. Denz, late of Wellington, and now studying medicine in London, Mr. Shorland showed that such oils are rich in vitamins, Since then he has made a detailed study of the ling. At Liverpool University, Mr. Shorland will examine methodically all the important fish liver oils, concerning himself particularly with nutritional values and the composition of these oils.
Ten scientific papers have been published by the researcher since he completed his Master of Science degree, and he has touched upon a number of subjects dealing with agricultural and pure chemistry. Lately he has been giving special attention to the composition of pampas grass. It is known now that pampas is richer in cellulose than the common forage grasses, but the nutritional values remain to be examined.
Born in Wellington in 1909, Mr. Shorland was educated at Wellington College and Victoria College. In 1931 he won the Sir George Grey Scholarship, and next year graduated Master of Science with first class honours in chemistry, winning the Jacob Joseph Scholarship, which provides for original research work for one year. He has been with the chemistry section of the Department of Agriculture since 1927.
