Support For Mr. Treadwell

WELLINGTON NORTH Young business men and enthusiastic women supporters were numerous among those who attended a meeting held on Monday evening to organise the campaign of Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell, Nationalist candidate for Wellington North.

Mr. C. H. Weston, K.C., took the chair, and in introducing Mr. Treadwell, referred to their long association during war time in France and i n business in Wellington. If Mr. Treadwell put the same energy into the campaign as he did into that of 20 years ago, he should find his place in the Parliament of New Zealand.

Mr. C. Birch, secretary for the candidate, appealed to all electors who desired a change of representative to come forward and assist personally in the organisation. Headquarters, he said, would be at the National Club Building, opposite the Post Office. Mr. Treadwell spoke of the necessity for organising, and laid out plans for the campaign. Mr. 0. Mazengarb addressed the meeting briefly, and in supporting Mr. Treadwell expressed the hope that the city .electorates would be represented again by business men, and thus remove the reproach that New Zealand is represented only by farming and labour candidates. OTAKI CANDIDATE Nationalist Selection on Saturday The Nationalist selection committee for Otaki will select its official candidate for the electorate at Paekakariki on Saturday afternoon. The leaders of the Nationalist Party (Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes and Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) have appointed Mr. John Hutcheson chairman of the selection committee. The Minister of Lands, Sir Alfred Ransom, addressed his first public meeting at Woodville for seven years last evening. There was a fair attendance. The Minister spoke on the lines of his Pahiatua address, outlining the general policy of the Government, and made a vigorous assault on the Labour Party. Mr. Thomas Golden, a farmer, of Fortrose, has been selected as l National candidate for the Mataura seat. There were four candidates for the nomination. Mr. Golden previously contested the seat in 1931. as an unofficial supporter of the Government. Mr. D. McDougall, the sitting member, is again, standing as an Independent. It was reported at. a recent Maori gathering at Nuhaka that Ratana candidates will contest all four Maori seats at the general election. Candidates have been on a tour of the North Island with Ratana as a preliminary to a campaign.
