ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Change in British System (British Official Wireless.) (Received August 27, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, August 26. According to the report of the Board of Education just issued, the total num ber of ' children attending public elementary schools last year was 5,576.752, and there were 448,421 m secondary schools. Steady progress has been made with the reorganisation of the elementary school system which has been proceeding for some years on the lines of the Hadow Report on the education of the adolescent, which is the accepted policy of the board. Considerable progress has also been made during the year by local author! ties in the replacement of old and the provision of new premises. During the last nine months of 1934 the board approved building proposals involving a capital expenditure of £4.449.212, which is greater by £885,878 than the total approved for the full financial year of 1933-1934.
