WOMAN SKIER BREAKS A LEG

Fall on Mount Ruapehu

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Chateau Tongariro, August 27.

While ski-ing et Scoria Flat, Mount Ruapehu, this afternoon, Miss Thelma Ross, of Wellington, a member of the Tararua Tramping Club party, fell on a slope near Salt Hut, breaking a leg below the knee.

Fortunately, medical assistance was forthcoming on the ski grounds. Splints were applied in Salt Hut, an injection of morphia being given. A stretcher was available at the hut, and the patient was made as comfortable as possible with mattresses, blankets and pillows. Miss Ross showed great fortitude during the ordeal, and remained cheerful throughout.

A large party assisted in carrying the stretcher down to the Chateau, but even with relays of six bearers the task of transporting the patient over 31 miles of steep track and road, nearly all covered with deep snow, under unfavourable weather conditions, was no light one. The patient received further attention at the Chateau, and afterward was taken by car to the Taumarunui Hospital.
