WORK APPRECIATED

New Zealand Delegation to London SHEEPOWNERS’ TRIBUTES Resolutions expressing appreciation of the work done by the members ->f the New Zealand delegation who went to England for the Royal jubilee celebrations and the meat negotiations with the Imperial authorities, were carried yesterday at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ and Farmers’ Federation. They were as follow: — “That this meeting records its appreciation of the good work done in the interests of New Zealand by the Prime Minister during his visit to England on the occasion of the jubilee of their Majesties the King and Queen. “That thts meeting records and expresses its thanks for, and its appreciation of, the very great value of the work done by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates in the interests of Dominion meat producers at the meat conference in London.”

The meeting also expressed its thanks to Mr. T. A. Duncan, chairman of the Meat Producers’ Board, and his colleagues, for their valuable assistance during the negotiations. With respect to the negotiations for a meat export agreement, the meeting was unanimously of the opinion that the agreement reached was very satisfactory, and that the avoidance of the imposition of a levy or tariff on meat imports in favour of regulated marketing was of the very greatest value to Dominion meat exporters. In his presidential address, Mr. H D. Acland, Christchurch, referred particularly to the good work done by Mr. Coates and Mr. Duncan. Mr. Acland said they had a difficult task, but had acquitted themselves in a manner deserving of the federation’s warmest thanks.

He thought the federation owed them special thanks for the great stand they took on its behalf, in favour of regulation of supplies, as against the levy suggested by Mr. Walter Elliot and Mr. J. H. Thomas. Had this levy been imposed, it would have meant an enormous tax on meat exports to Britain from the Dominion. It was fortunate for us that Mr, Coates was able, in response to a request by the British Government, to attend the conference, as the enormous issues at stake, affecting the whole Dominion, warranted sending the strongest possible delegation, and all must agree that the expense incurred had been fully justified.
