A stroke competition will be played on the Manor Park links on Saturday afternoon, and on Sunday a bogey competition will be played in the morning, and a fourball bogey event in the afternoon. The Tingey Cup semi-final and third round of the Bree Cup must be completed this week-end. The first round of the championships must be completed by September 8. School Teachers’ Tourney A golf tournament organised by Wellington school teachers was held on Monday on the Shandon links under perfect conditions. , Invitations were extended to the Education Department's inspectors and head office staff, and about 40 players participated in what promises to become a very popular annual tournament. The arrangements were in the capable hands of Messrs. Howarth and Tangney, who were- largely responsible for the* success of the tournament. Trophies for the various events ‘were kindly donated by Messrs, gtratmore and Sons, Jones Bros., Ltd., Whitcombc and Tombs, Briscoe Mills. Whitcoinbe and Caldwell, and W. Lauchlan, Ltd.

The championship over 36 holes was won by J. Mills, with 172, B. 11. Beale coming next with 173. The first medal round saw a tio between J. N. Millard, 88-16-72, and W. H. Smith, SB-.1.6-72. The second medal competition was won by J. Riley, with 89-17-72, E. Partridge coming next with 85-11-74. A bogey competition was won by A. McKinnon (G). who finished 2 down. B. G. Yates (11) was 3 down. The teams’ match, over 36 holes, was won by Head Office (Mills, Beale, and McKinnon), with a net medal score of 462. Coyle, Smith and Ward came second with 470. Hutt Ladies’ Tournament The golf should be of a high standard in the forthcoming tourney to be conducted by the Hutt ladies’ club, and the championship will be keenly contested, as the entries include the following players of note :—Featherston, Mrs. David Collins; Masterton, Mrs. Guy Williams, Miss Jocelyn Iloruabrook (Miramar open champion); Hawei'a, Miss Robertson; Heretaunga, Mrs. Welton Hogg; Christchurch, Miss Jean Marshall; Palmerston North, Mrs. Ekstedt; Miramar, Miss Gambrill, Mrs. Foreman; Hutt, Mrs. Partridge, Mrs. Slater, Mrs. Crombie. The holder, Mrs. Slater, will be called upon to play good golf to retain the title. South Auckland Title J. L. Black, Hutt club, will leave for Hamilton to-night, to defend his title as South Auckland golf champion, an honour he has won »ix times in the' past seven years. The only year he did not win the title was 1927, when he was contesting the New Zealand amateur championship at Wanganui. He will have to face strong opposition this year, as such able players as 11. D. Brinsden and B. G. Thomson, Auckland, will be among the competitors. Lost Ball in Hazard F. Marshall writes from Kelburn:— “During a golf match recently my opponent lost his ball in a hazard. I maintained it meant loss of hole during match play, and penalty and drop in medal play, j should be pleased to see your ruling, as 1 was overruled. Also could a local rule be made to cover such a hazard, making it a permanent rule to have a third off the tee or drop and penalty for both medal and match piny games where loss of ball occurs? It strikes me that local rules cannot upset regular rules of golf, if so. the game would vary according to the club in which you played.” The new rules provide that if a ball is lost in a hazard the player may drop another ball behind the hazard with a penalty of one stroke. Any club can make what local rules it pleases. A local rule could certainly be made providing for a third shot to be played off tne tee where the shot goes into a hazard. Sueh a local rule exists at the first hole on the Hutt links, where a lagoon is in front of the tee. Whether in medal or mutch play a player who loses a ball, whether in a hazard or not. is allowed to drop another ball with a penalty of one stroke. — “Niblick.”
