Local Officers Bill Main Topic at Conference
Sixtydive members from all parts of New Zealand attended the general conference of the Institute of . County Clerks (Inc.), opened in the Accountants’ Chambers, Wellington, yesterday. In reviews of the work of the past year emphasis was laid on the Local Government Officers Bill, on the promotion of which the institute has concentrated largely. In his report the president, Mr. F. H. Hudson (Horowhenua), said there were hopes that the sister Institute of Town Clerks would be able to come to a satisfactory arrangement with the Municipal Association whereby the Bill could be reintroduced to the House in the coming session., A deputation received from the New Zealand Institute of Town 'Clerks consisted of Messrs. 11. I’. Mourant (secretary), B. C. Knox and C. L. Bishop, who dealt at some length with the provisions of the Local Government Officers Bill which it was hoped to see put on the statute book in the near future. The deputation was assured of the co-oper-ation of the County Clerks’ Institute. It was decided to .appoint the president as tile institute’s representative on the proposed Examination Control Board. Officers were elected as follow;— President, Mr. F. 11. Hudson (Horowhenua) ; vice-presidents, Mr. G. Kelly (Canterbury), Mr. E. Ashcroft (Auckland) ; secretary-treasurer, Mr. J. W. Harding; executive, Messrs. E. A. Mahoney (Auckland branch), 11. 11. Richardson (Wellington), D. L. Crooks (Hawke’s Bay), C. Campbell (Taranaki), A. A. Readdie (CanterburyMarlborough), R. K. Gardiner (OtagoSouthland), and D. J. Evans (West Coast).
Appreciative reference was made to the strenuous and long service accorded the institute by Mr.»A. J. Service, as clerk of the Southland County Council, over a period of J4l years. Mr. Service was elected an honorary life member of the institute.
