NAZI QUARREL

Dr. Schacht Defeats Censorship

COPIES OF SPEECH CIRCULATED

Forceful Attack on AntiJewish Campaign Uy TelegrapU.—Press Assu.—Copyright (Received August 26, 7.30 p.m.) Berlin, August 26. Dr. 11. G. H. Schacht, Minister of Economics, defeated the Nazi censorship by circulating privately an unexpurgated version of his recent warning speech to banks and business houses. Business men are surprised at the force of his attack against the autiJewlsh campaign. Meanwhile lierr Streicher, who is directing the anti-Jewish drive, continues his campaign. He said at Magdeburg : 'if there is a God then the most glorious German nation will overvvhelm its mortal enemy.

A cable dated August 21 stated that the "News-Chronicle’s” Berlin correspondent said that an open quarrel, which might have far-reaching consequences to the Hitler regime, had broken out between Nazi extremists led, by Dr. Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, and Dr. Schacht, Minister of Economies, following Dr. Schacht’s speech ou August 18, which Dr. Goebbels ordered to be heavily censored before publication, especially the portion iu which Dr. Schacht openly attacked extremist. Nazis whose violent methods, he said, were hindering Germany's economic recovery., Dr. Schacht was supported by powerfoi conservative industrialists and also t»F conservative element of the Reichswehr. He intended to place before Herr Hitler the realities of the sitaution and would also further attempt to persuade Herr Hitler to call off the anti-Jewish campaign.

It was reported that be was ready to resign unless he was assured that Germany’s serious economic situation , was secured against disturbance by violent outside elements. In the speech in question. Dr. Schacht, in opening the East German Fair, attacked Herr Streicher’s Jew-baiting methods, and declared that the Nazi programme, while debarring Jews from comradeship and citizenship, admitted them to the operation of laws which were now being framed, and therefore Jews could not arbitrarily be victimised. This also applied to the religious question. Germany stood midway to the greatest task in history, and whoever interfered with the Government's policy did a dangerous thing. Priests must not intermingle in politics. Jews must realise that they were no longer dominant in the leadership of the State. No individual action must solve these problems. The people's earnings were safe, but rigorous economy must be exercised.
