ELECTORAL REFORM
Not on Government’s Programme

Electoral reform is not at the moment on the Government’s programme for the coming session, according to a statement, made by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes), who is visiting Christchurch. Cabinet has all the material information it needs on the subject, he said, and will be ready to deal with it when the time comes to review the electoral laws generally.
“If any demand exists in the country for a change in the electoral system, it must have developed during my absence,” said Mr. Forbes. “I doubt whether there would be any large measure of support in the present Parliament. The Preferential Voting Bill was introduced by a private member, but it was not proceeded with, presumably because the member found there was no evident enthusiasm for ill”
