Brawn rather than brain may be the qualification of a player, but not of a referee, it would appear from discussion as to the value of theoretical examinations at the annual meeting yesterday of the New Zealand Basketball Referees’ Association. Mr. J. C. Hayliurst (South Canterbury) stated that it required mental application and theoretical knowledge to interpret the rules and apply them in practice on the playing field. It was stated in the annual report that of G2 papers examined, only 19 gained the 85 per cent, required for a pass; of 21 candidates n practical tests, only nine passed.
