Motor Taxation
Sir,—Further to your editorial on motorists and taxation (August 24), the following is worthy of note; In a local weekly appears the _ photograph of the Rangitjra bridge, which, it is stated, has been purchased by the Highways Board while the railways are proceeding with the building of a new bridge. The original bridge (the one sold) served both road and rail purposes in the past. It has come to my notice to-day that a sawmiller who proposes to haul his sawn timber over a rated road has been advised by. the local body that he will be required to pay iivepence per hundred feet of timber as a special levy in addition to curtailing his load to 64 tons gross and paying heavy duty, petrol, and tire tax.
The above, together with your remarks, forces one to the realisation that in spite of the futility o£ our individual votes it cannot go on for ever.—l am, etc., C.G.W. Palmerston North, August 24.
