HUTT VALLEY NEWS

A start is being made by the Hutt County Council with the scheme for collecting household refuse at Fairfield, aud a dump is available nearby with the sanction of the property owner.

The Hutt County Council yesterday received a letter from Mrs. I’. A. M ylic in winch she stated that motorists made a practice of parking their cars opposite her tea rooms, causing her financial lost’. She asked that a parking place be created round the corner in Stokes Valley and that a “no parking” notice be erected near her' premises. The council decided to accede to her request, which will necessitate the filling in of a small hollow.

The Hutt County overseer reported to yesterday's meeting of the council that during the following month it was intended to proceed with the extension of the footpath from the Stokes Valley Hall to Raukawa Road.

A decision io make application for two complete letter deliveries throughout Upper Hutt Valley was made at the meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night.

Preparations are in hand to commence the work o’f forming the footpath from the Taita School to the Taitn Hotel, and the work will be proceeded with as soon as weather conditions are suitable. A small footpath has been formed from the loot of Porutu Street to Fairfield Avenue, and the big pipe culvert ■near Brassell Street is being extended to the boundary fence.

ANNUAL MEETING

St. Stephen’s Tennis Club

The St. Stephen’s Tennis Club, Lower Hutt, held its annual meeting during the week, there being a satisfactory attendance of members. The president, Mr. F. A. Feist, expressed pleasure at the present position of the club, and said he hoped the coming season would be even more successful. The president drew members' attention to the desirability of making an effort during the season to raise funds in reduction of the bank overdraft, and he appealed to them to do what they could. In response members volunteered to make themselves individually responsible for obtaining funds. Opportunity’ was taken to make a presentation to one of the foundation members of the club, Mr. H. Babington, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The gift was a handsome chiming dock. Mr. Babington expressed his appreciation of the many happy games of tennis he had enjoyed on the club’s courts, and regretted that owing to leaving the district he would not be continuing membership this season. The following officers were elected: — Patron, Rev. J. E. Lopdell; president, Mr. F. A. Feist; vice-presidents, Messrs. 11. S. Barron, E. P. Hay, H. W. Kersley. F. McDonald and A. L. Wall; club captain, Mr. L. V. Fisher; deputy club captain, Mr. C. Leyland: secretary, Miss E. Macomish ; treasurer, Mr. J. B. McCallum ; auditor, Mr. F. The annual report stated: “Membership, which now stands at 3S playing members, has been well maintained and prospects are that this number will be added to iu the coming season. Concerning finance the club has had a satisfactory year and the accumulated funds have increased by £2O/8/5, due principally to the reduction in bank overdraft, donations, and to "m collection of all subscriptions.

“The standard of play continues to improve and many of the new members of last year were showin" good form at the end of the season. Two teams were entered in the sub-association matches, and two of our members, Messrs. G. M. Renner and N. Shearer, took part in outside tournaments. In the ladder and handicap matches some keen contests were witnessed,, and in particular the final of the Kersley Cup match was very closely fought, out. “During the recess ‘busy bees’ organised by Mr. Leyland have cleared up the grounds and paths and planted shelter trees on the boundary so that the courts should present a pleasing appearance on opening day. “In regard to the club generally’ a line spirit of cordiality existed throughout the season, and members realise that attention to the social side is just as important as the game.”

HOSPITAL PROJECT

County Decides Not to Join Conference

The Hutt County Council decided yesterday that it would not take part in the conference to consider hospital provision for the Hutt Valley. A letter from the town clerk of Lower Hutt, stated: “I have to advise you that at last evening’s meeting of my council the question of hospital provision for the valley was under consideration, and it was ultimately decided that my council call a conference of the Upper Hutt. Lower Hutt, and Eastbourne Borough and the Hutt: County Council’s Health Committees for the purpose of discussing the hospital needs of tbe Hutt Valley. If your council approves of the proposal and you will advise me accordingly, I will have pleasure in arranging for tbe conference at a later date.” The county chairman, Mr. D. R. Hoggard, said there seemed to be a proposal to set up a separate hospital at Lower Hutt. The county council had under consideration the suggestion of, getting linked up with some other hospital district, and be did not think they could attend a conference of tbe kind.

On the motion of the chairman, it was resolved to inform the town clerk of Lower Hutt that the Hutt County Council did not propose to be represented at the conference.
