RICCARTON RACES

Jolly Beggar and Wino Win Chief Events

CHRISTCHURCH HUNT New Totalisator In Use (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher. ') Cliristchurch, August 3. Racing at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday .at Riccartou provided plenty of interest in view of the forthcoming National meeting, and both the open events were won by horses prominently engaged at the National meet- / ing. H Jolly’ Beggar won the Longbeaeh ■ Hurdles and Wino the Brabazon Handi‘cap, the latter enhancing his Winter Cup prospects. Great interest was taken in the new totalisator, which is the latest automatic device for wagering, and the only one of its kind so far introduced in New Zealand, though the betting at Trentham is very much on the same lines. On the C.J.C. machine, however, win and place tickets are sold from the same unit, and the dividends are automatically calculated during the progress of the betting, The officials were pleased with the day s working, and it was a valuable rehearsal for the National meeting. Some difficulty was experienced in reading the dividend barometers at any distance owing to the light reflections throwing shadows on the tapes, but it is anticipated that this will bo dealt with. The barometers differ from the Trentham ones in that the dividends are read from the top downward, and the graduations of pounds and fractions are much larger up to double figures, but for the higher amounts the spacings are much more crowded. In addition, the figures marking the dividend graduations are made to do duty for three columns, whereas at Trentham each column has its own particular markings. However, there is no difficulty in reading the amounts the various runners are paying. The club made a pleasing and sporting gesture toward the farmers over whose properties the hunts are conducted, in entertaining them to lunch, and 150 guests were provided for in this way. Favourite Wins. Only three started in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, Burglar having broken down. Wykemist was the favourite and he won easily. Scotsden took him on throughout and actually drew well clear from the kennels double, but Wykemist was only being’ given a breather. He moved up again and was in front at the last fence to score easily. The runners cut out Cutt’s fence owing to frozen ground on the take-off side. The pool was small £133, but on the same race last year the totalisator handled only £29/10/-. Plenty of Entertainment.

Backers of the four runners in the Lawford Hunters’ Steeplechase got plenty of entertainment for their money. Aberfeldy went out early losing his rider at the first of the kennels double, while Parasang, a well-backed horse, also jumped badly and lost a lot of ground. Ban Russell and Witui then staged an interesting duel until the sod wall three fences from home. Dau Russell hit hard here and gave Witui a comfortable lead. Witui was a certainty till the last fence when he slipped and fell on landing. Dan Russell galloped over him as he lay on the ground and was lucky to escape being brought down. His gear shifted however and his rider was afraid to move so that he slowed right up. Apparently he was unaware that Parasang was still in the race but tbe latter made up ground rapidly and before the rider of Dan Russell got to work he had the race won. The crowd got a good laugh. Witui was remounted for third money, Backers of Parasang were lucky, for on the merits of tbe running he should have been only third. The stewards inquired into the riding of Dan Russell from the last fence home. J. Kerr the jockey said that after jumping over Witui his stirrups came adrift and he eased up thinking he was the only one left in the race. The stewards issued a severe reprimand. Cutts’s fence was again cut out in this race. Solid Finish. A solid finishing run featured the win of Glenavon in the Selwyn Handicap. He was always fairly well placed and had the race won a fair distance off the post, though at the finish he was pushed to keep off an outsider in Lady Graceful. Hine Ra although drawn 15 began brilliantly and soon crossed over to the rails to lead on to the course proper with Master Tony while just in behind came Grey Honour and Whaddon Chase and handy but out on the course Disguise Glenavon and Lady Graceful. Hine Ra led into the straight but was weakening at the false rail where Grey Honour and Whaddon Chase moved up near the rails and Glenavon and Disguise further out. A furlong from home Glenavon and Grey Honour, who are stable mates, had charge together but Grey Honour weakened and Glenavon was chased home by Lady Graceful, having only a head margin at the post. Disguise was a fair third with Grey Honour, Bereft, Whaddon Chase, Trumpet Blast and Girl Guide all well up. Glenavon is a brother to Red Heckle, and Lady Graceful is a half-sister to Vintage, so they should go on to further successes. Grey Honour had every chance, but he should improve and another likely improver is the Hunting Song gelding Whaddon Chase. He looked dangerous when he bobbed up on the inner at tbe false rail but he could not sustain the effort. Hine Ra showed brilliant speed and when more seasoned should be heard of. Win for Jolly Beggar. The betting in the hurdle race was erratic, Polydora being the win favourite, but Verden a pronounced place fancy. The race was marked by moderate jumping displays, Hounslow being the only one that could be credited with a soun effort in this respect. Hounslow led over the first fence, but the subsequent running was made by Aerden and Jolly Beggar from Polydora, Pahu, Hounslow and Lycidas. Jolly Beggar took charge down the back from Verden and coming to the fence at the five furlongs Polydora ran up to .Tolly Beggar. Verden fell here and Polydora made a bad jump. Jolly Beggar then being clear round the turn from Pahu, Polydora. Hounslow, Lycidas and Red .Sun. Polydora took second place entering the straight, but Jolly Beggar was first over the last fence, and once over Polydora was unable to make any impression. Red Sun then put in a sensational run on the flat and finishing strongly ran Jolly Beggar to a neck. Polydora wns a moderate third,

with Pahu fourth, then Lycidas and Hounslow, with Radiant Rose and Aladdin a long way back. Jolly Beggar ran out a lot at his fences, especially the last one, and it was this that caused Polydora’s bad jump at the five furlongs. Had she jumped better she would have won, but so far as that aspect is concerned had Red Sun handled his fences with any confidence he wculd have won easily. He was very timid over the early obstacles and was giving the leaders a long start over the concluding stages. His finishing run was a phenomenal effort. The others except Hounslow were not impressive. Hounslow was sticking on well, but the journey was too short for him. As it was the winner’s first race since May he should improve in his jumping for the National meeting. Wino Pleases. The Brabazon Handicap included 15 Winter Cup horses, and the first pair home, Wino and Knockfin, are in the Cup field. Wino put up a pleasing effort, but on the running Knock-fin looked unlucky, .as she gave the field a start out of the barrier of three or four lengths. Monipere, Knocknn, Glowlight, Argentic and Sunce were all badly away, the leaders out of the barrier being Cottesmore, Wino, Fair Weather, Rebel Chief, Metal Bird and Silver Bight. Before they had got out of the back stretch Wino had charge with Rebel Chief from Cottes- 1 more, Metal Bird, Dollar Bill and Knockfin, the latter having run up very quickly. Golden Hair was back in the ruck on the outer. Knockfin had continued her run on tbe turn, and was lying second to Wino at the half, followed by Rebel Chief, Dollar Bill, Cottesmore, Metal Bird, Sea Fox and Gay Crest. Wino and Knockfin led into the straight, where Rebel Chief weakened. Nothing had any chance with the leading pair, and Wino held off Knockfin comfortably. Metal Bird was a good third, with Gay Crest fourth, followed by Courtyard, Rebel Chief, Tuirau, Monipere, Sea Fox, Land Raid, Golden Hair and Southdown. Wino won really well, and must hold good prospects in the Winter Cup. Knockfin was undoubtedly unlucky, and far too hurried a run was made with her. However, when she did go she got a clear ran. Metal Bird ran well, but he is an old horse (7 years), and was running in hunters’ plates a week ago. Gay Crest ran a good race, but nothing really ever threatened the leader, and Rebel Chief tired badly. Golden Hair was never dangerous. She drew 17 and was never out of the ruck. She was closer at the finish than at any stage, but it was hardly an encouraging-effort in view of the Winter Cup. Tuirau finished fairly well up, and should improve into a cup possibility. MeHeath Scores Easily. The ten furlong hack was won decisively by MeHeath. Riptide and Latitude set a fast pace from MeHeath and Sky Rover. Riptide led into the straight, but MeHeath eut him down and won well. Star Raider and Madam Pompadour finished strongly from the back for the minor places, and the others were well beaten.

The winner has improved, and should win again shortly.
