ROAD CYCLING

Makara Time Trial Proves Strenuous Contest

FASTEST TIME TO BOULTON

Apparently the schooling the Poneke club riders have had on their homo cours-e at Kilbirnie stood them ui good stead for they scooped the pool in the Poneke eveut over the severe Makara circuit on Saturday. K. McLeod won the handicap section after riding a splendid race, surprising all by his good riding on the hilly section, and this was mainly responsible lor his success. J. Boulton, who has not previously competed on the scratch mark, was in his element over the rough roads and steep gradients and returned the fastest time for the 25 miles journey. Only a few weeks previously he won the Walsh Cup in a 33 miles event at Kilbirnie. The event was conducted under Olympic conditions, each 1 competitor starting at minute intervals and riding unpaced throughout the distance. The riders soon settled to a steady pace, but the most successful rode with reserve over the first eight miles. R. Triplow rode well in the early part, but had trouble with his gears at five miles and later was heavily shaken when he was thrown on a corner, but lie continued. Two juniors, H. Sparkes and I. G. Philips, both with a handicap of 24min., rode well to complete the distance. Phillips took 1.46, quite good time for one who weighs only 7st. D. Rose (14 min.) rode well enough to bring him into second place, and third went to A. Huxford (lomin.), a rugged rider. C. V. Aldridge, who won this event in 1930, rode consistently to gain fourth place on 16min.

L. Walsh (3min.) made second fastest time and was only a minute slower than Boulton, who now holds the club championship, with Walsh as runner-up. Blackett (ecr.) was third fastest. There were 20 Poneke, seven Petone and five Port Nicholson riders in the competition. Several riders suffered mishaps but only four failed to complete the distance. Placings are as follow and are given in fastest times order:—
