The Flower Garden

Keep the soil free and open round the spring bulbs.

Prepare for the first planting of gladioli by working the soil to a good depth and slightly enriching it with leaf-mould and old manure. Continue the planting of all roses, shrubs and trees.

Plant out seedlings of all hardy annuals as they reach the required state of development, and if a long succession, of blooms is desired, sow another lot of seed.

Lift, divide and replant gerberas where required. Continue the planting of all herbaceous perennialsPrune hydrangeas. Poses need pruning and spraying with lime-sulphur. The Vegetable Garden Plant cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce. New asparagus beds can be planted now. Sow broad beans, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, leeks, mushroom spawn, early carrots, lettuce, onions, spinach and turnips. Plant out horse-radish, seakale, rhubarb and savoy. In mild districts a few early potatoes can be planted.

Continue the planting of fruit trees. Spray and prune fruit trees. Cut back old trees intended for grafting and prepare grafts.
