Charge of Bigamy Against

Auckland Man

Palmerston North. July 25.

On a charge of bigamy a jury in the Supreme Court to-day acquitted William Albert John Kitteridge, of Auckland. after a retirement of 28 minutes. Mr. Justice Blair was on tlie bench. The ease for Hie Crown was conducted by Mr. 11. R. Cooper, and Mr. A. M. Ongley defended accused. The allegation was made by the Crown that on November 1, 1928. having been already married to Elizabeth Ann Russell on May 26. 1916. at the registry office at Poplar, London, tiecased went through a form of marriage at Hie Methodist Parsonage, Palmerston North, with Alvira Barrett. Four witnesses were called for the Crown, but no evidence was called for the defence.

Summing up. his Honour said it was quite clear that accused went through a form of marriage in 1925. He himself had admitted that. The onus was on the Crown to prove that he had married twice and that at the time he remarried his first wife was alive.
