Tinakori Road Affair Admitted by Clerk
SENTENCE DEFERRED An admission that lie had committed the armed robbery in Tlnakori Road on April 22 was made by James Hopkins, clerk, aged 44. when he appeared before the Chief Justice (Sir Aliehael Alyers) in the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday. Hopkins was alleged to have assau.tcd ami robbed Johanna Byrne and Joseph Byrne at their home in Tiuakori Road while armed with an automatic pistol. In the Afagistrate’s Court Hopkins pleaded not guilty, imt when he came tip for trial yesterday lie pleaded guilty to charges of assault and robbery while armed. The Chief Justice (Sir Michael Alyers), in remanding prisoner for sentence until Friday, asked his counsel, Air. J. A. Scott, if there were any particular matters which he wished to be investigated. Air. Scott said that on Friday he proposed to lead evidence about prisoner’s general good character. His Honour: Nothing about his mentality?
Air. Scott: I wish to put before your Honour something dealing with his war record.
Ilis Honour: I said about his mentality?—“l am not putting forward that he is mentally weak.” His Honour: That is all right, Air. Scott. I just wanted to know whether there was any such suggestion.
