BROADCASTING BOARD
Country Not Represented
FARMER RAISES PROTEST
“This is one of those things that would only make people smile at us,’ said the president, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., at a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday, when a remit declaring that the country community was not adequately represented on the Broadcasting Board came up for discussion. Mr. G. W. Warren (North Canterbury), in moving the remit, said that before the board was reconstituted the country had a. representative, but when the personnel was increased from three to seven the country was overlooked. “I am inclined to think that is a slight on us,” said Mr. Warren. "Surely there are men in the countiy worthy of a seat on the board. Of course we know why the former country member was put there. . .' A Voice: We don’t. Tell us, (Laughter.) ■ , , Mr. Warren: Well, there are wheels within wheels. He was put there more or les’s to stop him standing against the Prime Minister. (Renewed laughter.) , “I think we must exercise a good deal of restraint in a matter of this kind,” said Mr. Polson. “After all, these men are appointed on account of special ability, and not because they represent a city or the country. The town versus country question doesnt come into It at all- Personally, I doo' know whether the board gives a good service or a bad one. I usually turn off the radio when I enter my room. Itirritates me when I am busy, and 1 am rarely anything else but busy. Apparently the men elected know their job and I would be sorry to see us raise tbe question of town versus country.” The remit was withdrawn.
