Provincial Reports UTIKU MEETING The monthly ineeting of the Utiku Women's Institute was held recently with ; a good attendance of members and vistorsi. A demonstration of wool-quilt , making was given by Mrs, Transom. The competition resulted as follows Senior Mrs. Marsh and Mrs. Maher 1. Mrs. ; I’raguell 2, Miss Anderson, Miss Marsh. Mrs. Kendall entertained with , a recitation. j The competition for next month will be ; n handkerchief made from a salt bag. i The Rev. Mr. Nicholls, of Wanganui, will | give an address. The hostesses for the ■ month of July will be Mesdames E. 11. ■ Fannin. Scott. Witherington. Swanson, j Misses P. Prime and G. Gibbs. Ohingaiti. The Ohingaiti Women’s Institute meeting was presided over by Mrs. Charles. The competition for sponge cake was won by Mrs. Worsfold. The hostesses for, the afternoon were Mewlames Darragh, Wereta and Earl. Newlands. The June meeting of the Newlands Women’s Institute was, held in the form of a social evening. Mrs. Kettlewell presided, and a record attendance was present. A report of the annual council meeting at Porirua was presented by Mrs. Horridge. Two musical items given by members of the Glee Circle were much appreciated. Comedy was supplied in the form of a clever mime, “The Bachelor and his Button,” by Miss Banco; and the playlet, “The Quiet Chat,” was presented ■ by members of the Drama Circle. A presentation of a cup, saucer and plate was made to Mrs. Woods in recognition of her services as pianist by members of the drama and glee circles. A competition for crocheted beret was won by Mrs. Pender, Mrs.'Kettlewell second. and one for shortbread was won by Mrs. C. Phillips, Mrs. Knight being second. ' Supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Horridge, Cornwell ttnd Liddle. Alfredton. The Alfredton Women’s Institute held ■their June meeting in the hall. Mrs. G. Napier presiding. Mrs. Weston spoke on the delegates meeting held at I’aliiatua, and Mrs. Heckler gave a lengthy report on the federation meeting held at Carterton. Competitions were a worked button hole, won by Mrs. T. Smith, Mrs. McLean second, and Miss Sylvia Napier third, and a rooster torn from a piece of paper, this being won by Mrs. R. G. Low, Mrs. McLean second and Miss E. McLean third. Both competitions were judged by Mrs. Page, Eketahuna. Mrs. G. Napier gave a demonstration on “How to make Pastry,” which was much appreciated. The hostesses were Mesdames S. Davies, Edwards and Watson. Belmont. Members of the Belmont Women’s Institute interested in gardening recently gathered at the home of Mrs. Andrews to hear an address given by Mrs. Knox Gilmer. The speaker expressed the pleasure it always gave her to talk on gardening and gave the members some very useful hints, especially mentioning shrubs, sweet peas and bulbs. Mrs. Gilmer showed how to prepare a bowl Of hyacinths for indoor growing which when completed she presented to the institute, together with a beautiful shrub. Mrs. Bennett, president, passed a vote of thanks to Mrs* Gilmer for her kindness and asked her to accept a box of fruit in appreciation. The institute held its monthly meeting recently. It was decided to enter exhibits at the forthcoming show. Community singing was enjoyed, and Mrs. Mack displayed a collection of pewter work and gave a brief outline of its making. “ The results of Cooking Competition No. 2 were: Mrs. Payne, jnr., 1; Mrs. Alsop 2. Mrs. Hill iAis the winner of the trophy (for* host joke) donated bj Mrs. Payne, and Mrs Payne, jnrwon Mrs. McDonald's trophy. Mrs. E. la. Turner donated the May trophy, a tin of tea. The judge for both the cooking and jokes was Mrs. Wallace. Mrs. Bennett presented posies to Mrs. Mack and Mrs. Wallace, and thanked all who had taken part in the programme. Gladstone. The monthly meeting of the Gladstone Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs. Joblin presided over a large attendance ot members and friends. Visitors and new members were welcomed by the president. During the afternoon Miss Maddever demonstrated the weaving of dolls’ cane furniture. Miss Maddever was accorded a vote of thanks. The competition for the best article made from a pair of old stockings was won by Miss C. Cooper with Miss McKay second. Tea was served by Mns. Day atul helpers. Horoelia. The monthly meeting of the Horoeka Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Lunt. Considering the boisterous day, there was a good attendance. Mre. Frame presided. . Several letters were read, one being from Mrs. Crewe, president of the BushWairarapa Federation in connection with her recent visit to this district. The competition was “Four Varieties of Sweets.” Mrs. Urquhart gained first place and Mrs. T. Whitta second. An interesting talk on the Franz Joseph Glacier was given by Miss Nora Whitta, who also showed a number of snaps of interest. , The making of a mat from long strips of rag and a hook was demonstrated by Mrs. Burling. A bring-and-buy was held —an item which always proves popular. The hostesses were Mrs. Lunt, Mrs. Burling and Mrs. Gillam. Trentham. The monthly meeting of the Trentham Women’s Institute was presided over by the president, Mrs. Anderson, who welcorned visitors and members. Mrs. Boyes gave an interesting talk on cooking and left several of her recipes. The dancing circle demonstrated folk dancing. An appeal from the Red Cross for ■warm clothing is to be met from the competition. something new made from something old. The bring-and-buy stall in charge of Mrs. Hughes, jun. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Tierney, Mrs. Coker and Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Morriss was the winner of both competitions, Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Anderson being second.
