LIME IS NEEDED

By Carnations and Pinks

All the carnations and pinks are “lime-lovers,” which means that they like to have in the soil in which they are growing a greater proportion of lime than most plants do. For the border carnations apply at the rate of not exceeding 41b. per square yard. Or vpu may give double that quantity of finely crushed mortar rubble. Never mind if there is a good deal of brick in this; crushed brick in itselfd has a R»od influence on the heavy soils. Apply the stuff evenly on a dry day and fork it into and mix it with the top 6in. of soil. In addition to carnations and pinks generally, this dressing will be appreciated by all the newer varieties of the Allwoodil section.

Also, lime or finely broken up mortar rubble should be applied now to alpine dianthuses or rock pinks growing in nooks in the rockery. First clean over each chimp and then take the hand-fork and break up the surface soil down to the fibrous roots—without actually disturbing these. Then sprinkle the chalk-evenly round and among each dump, afterward stirring it in with the points of the tines of the hand-fork. You will get your reward presently in vigorous plants and sheets of bright blooms.
