Marked Decrease in Export Values

IMPORTS GROWING Reduction in Visible Balance A reduction in exports, and a further rise in imports, with a substantial reduction in the visible excess of exports are the main features of the overseas trade returns for May issued yesterday by the Customs Department. Exports last month were valued in New Zealand currency at £4,326.000. compared with £4,710.000 for May, 1934 a reduction of £384,000. but they were £1.206.000 in excess of those for May. 1933. On lhe other hand, imports last month totalled £3.024.000, compared with £2.343.000 for May, 1934, an Increase of £681.000, and tin advance of nearly £1.000,000 over those for May, 1933.' Five Months’ Comparison. Exports for the five months ended Mav 31 totalled £23.882.000. compared with £28.203.000 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of £4.321,000, but they were £8,541.000 above those for the five months of 1933. .

Imports for the five months totalled £14,362,000, compared with £12.028,000 for the corresponding period of last yeqr, an increase of £2.334.000. The excess of exports for the five months was £9.520.000, compared with £16.175,000 for the corresponding period of last year, a reduction of £6.655,000.
