Mr. Appleton’s Campaign • At the Oddfellows’ Hall, i’brirua, last, evening Mr. Wil) Appleton, candidate for. the Otaki seat, gave an address. Mr. I?. W, Wjndlcy. who was iu the chair, Stat-, ed that he had known Mr. Appleton for many years through his association with Titahi Bay. Mr. Appleton warned his hearers of the tendency, in times of returning prosperity, for a nation to rest on its laurels. When people had their "back to the wall" they found themselves willing and able to use their powers of decision and action, but ns soon as the necessity for a desperate struggle was over, they were inclined to slip hade into a policy of drift. Mr. Appleton said that lie had every sympathy witli Labour ideals, but on the question ot labour there must be greater co-operation between employers and employees, He dealt with the question of employment, and outlined works of national importance which he considered should now be put in band, among them the construction of a new bighAjiy from I’ukerua to Jhiekakariki. and tho completion of the Gisborne railway. Mr. Appleton stated that while in Great Britain he had closely studied the bousing schemes in operation there, aud had coine to the conclusion that something of a like nature should be carried out in New Zealand.

The speaker said that credit was freely available at the present time for sound enterprise, cheap money was to bo had. and credit was being offered sellers and buyers alike, but. as lie reminded his listeners, those who offer credit cannot force others to accept or use it. It was only when an atmosphere of confidence was created that people could he persuaded to launch out in various directions and so make use of idle money. Mr. Appleton also outlined proposals for the rehabilitation of the farming community. At the conclusion of his address MrAppleton answered a number of questions. when n vote of thanks, moved by Mr. Hunter and seconded by Mr. Marshall, to the speaker was carried by acclamation. ___________
