Objection to Edinburgh Proposal

Two crowded meetings were held at Edinburgh by opponents of the proposal to confer the freedom of the city on Mr. J. A. Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia, who is a Roman Catholic. Cr. John Cormack, accompanied by Ur. James Marr, announced that it was intended to muster 15,000 demonstrators outside U.sher Hall during the ceremony. The demonstration would be peaceful but noisy. Meanwhile, Cr. Marr, supported by 24 sympathisers, would protest verbally inside the hall.

Cr. Cormack told an interviewer that the action was directed not against Australia. but against the principle of conferring the freedom of the city upon u Roman Catholic.

Mr. Lyons, who contemplated withdrawing from accepting the offer of the freedo mof Edinburgh- but was dissuaded by the town clerk, states that lie is satisfied the opposition from a section of Edinburgh Protestants is a storm in a teacup.
